Exercise for Healthy Skin

Exercise for Healthy Skin e1465179354830

When we age, we start to lose collagen, which makes our face look older.  Doing physical activities can help to promote the new growth of collagen in your skin cells.  This will help your facial skin look younger and more vibrant.  Exercise helps to increase the circulation in your blood.  Exercise can make you sweat, which helps to flush out impurities from the epidermal layer of your skin and keep your pores clean.  If you have problems with acne or other skin conditions, then exercise can help to make your skin look smoother and healthier

You can pretty much do any kind of exercise such as bike riding, walking, Pilates, yoga, dancing, or whatever kind of exercise you enjoy that will speed up your heart rate up and increase your blood flow.

If you want to have a more youthful look, then do some facial exercises as well to help tone and tighten problem areas such as a sagging neck, tired looking eyes, and wrinkles around the mouth, etc.

By putting together an exercise routine that you can stick with for three or more days per week, you will be able to look younger, have healthier skin, and experience an increase in your energy and stamina.

Spiritual Growth

Spiritual Growth e1465171915196

To grow spiritually in a world defined by power, money, and influence is a Herculean task. Modern conveniences such as electronic equipments, gadgets, and tools as well as entertainment through television, magazines, and the web have predisposed us to confine our attention mostly to physical needs and wants. As a result, our concepts of self-worth and self-meaning are muddled. How can we strike a balance between the material and spiritual aspects of our lives?

To grow spiritually is to look inward.

Introspection goes beyond recalling the things that happened in a day, week, or month. You need to look closely and reflect on your thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and motivations. Periodically examining your experiences, the decisions you make, the relationships you have, and the things you engage in provide useful insights on your life goals, on the good traits you must sustain and the bad traits you have to discard. Moreover, it gives you clues on how to act, react, and conduct yourself in the midst of any situation. Like any skill, introspection can be learned; all it takes is the courage and willingness to seek the truths that lie within you. Here are some pointers when you introspect: be objective, be forgiving of yourself, and focus on your areas for improvement.

To grow spiritually is to develop your potentials.

Religion and science have differing views on matters of the human spirit. Religion views people as spiritual beings temporarily living on Earth, while science views the spirit as just one dimension of an individual. Mastery of the self is a recurring theme in both Christian (Western) and Islamic (Eastern) teachings. The needs of the body are recognized but placed under the needs of the spirit. Beliefs, values, morality, rules, experiences, and good works provide the blueprint to ensure the growth of the spiritual being. In Psychology, realizing oneís full potential is to self-actualize. Maslow identified several human needs: physiological, security, belongingness, esteem, cognitive, aesthetic, self-actualization, and self-transcendence. James earlier categorized these needs into three: material, emotional, and spiritual. When you have satisfied the basic physiological and emotional needs, spiritual or existential needs come next. Achieving each need leads to the total development of the individual. Perhaps the difference between these two religions and psychology is the end of self-development: Christianity and Islam see that self-development is a means toward serving God, while psychology view that self-development is an end by itself.

To grow spiritually is to search for meaning.

Religions that believe in the existence of God such as Christianism, Judaism, and Islam suppose that the purpose of the human life is to serve the Creator of all things. Several theories in psychology propose that we ultimately give meaning to our lives. Whether we believe that life’s meaning is pre-determined or self-directed, to grow in spirit is to realize that we do not merely exist. We do not know the meaning of our lives at birth; but we gain knowledge and wisdom from our interactions with people and from our actions and reactions to the situations we are in. As we discover this meaning, there are certain beliefs and values that we reject and affirm. Our lives have purpose. This purpose puts all our physical, emotional, and intellectual potentials into use; sustains us during trying times; and gives us something to look forward to—a goal to achieve, a destination to reach. A person without purpose or meaning is like a drifting ship at sea.

To grow spiritually is to recognize interconnections.

Religions stress the concept of our relatedness to all creation, live and inanimate. Thus we call other people ‘brothers and sisters’ even if there are no direct blood relations. Moreover, deity-centered religions such as Christianity and Islam speak of the relationship between humans and a higher being. On the other hand, science expounds on our link to other living things through the evolution theory. This relatedness is clearly seen in the concept of ecology, the interaction between living and non-living things.  In psychology, connectedness is a characteristic of self-transcendence, the highest human need according to Maslow. Recognizing your connection to all things makes you more humble and respectful of people, animals, plants, and things in nature. It makes you appreciate everything around you. It moves you to go beyond your comfort zone and reach out to other people, and become stewards of all other things around you.

Growth is a process thus to grow in spirit is a day-to-day encounter. We win some, we lose some, but the important thing is that we learn, and from this knowledge, further spiritual growth is made possible.

Exercise to Help Arthritis

Exercise for Arthritis e1465179408234

All your bones are joined together by joints.  Everywhere your bones meet there is cartilage; which is a rubbery, protective layer that helps your joints move smoothly and painlessly.  When your cartilage wears out, the thin membrane called the synovium, which provides fluid to lubricate the moving parts of your joints, becomes inflamed.  This can cause rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis develops slowly over the years and is a result of the wear and tear placed on your joints.  People over the age of 50 will most likely have at least one of their joints affected by osteoarthritis.  Rheumatoid arthritis starts out with red, stiff, swollen and painful joints.  It can actually cause scar tissue to develop in the joints or in extreme cases, cause your bones to fuse together.

Below are some tips to help you prevent against developing arthritis or to help ease the pain:

Walking is one of the best exercises you can do.  It is a low impact exercise that gives you the maximum results.  Try starting off with walking 10 to 15 minutes a day, then gradually work up to 30 minutes a day.

Stretching your muscles can be achieved by learning yoga.  Try starting slow by doing each stretch for 15 to 20 seconds.  Make sure to find the best yoga stretches that focus on your trouble spots.

If you are overweight, then losing weight can help by taking some of the pressure off your joints.  The best way to lose weight is to cut back on your calorie intake a little each day.  You do not need to make a drastic change in your diet, simply eat smaller portions and add an exercise routine to your day to help drop a few pounds, then you will notice a decrease in the pain from your arthritis in little or no time.

Be sure to check with your doctor before starting any kind of exercise program to make sure that it will not do you more harm than good for your arthritis.  Your doctor should be able to tell you which exercises and stretches are the best ones for your arthritic symptoms.

Eat Food Rich in Calcium for Your Health

Calcium Rich Foods e1465179605273

Calcium plays an important role in maintaining strong bones and teeth, and to prevent against osteoporosis.  It also plays an important role in the regulation of the cardiovascular system and the nervous system.

Dairy products are the main source of food containing calcium.  These include milk, yogurt and cheese, etc.  Choose the low fat version so that you can still get the benefit of the calcium without all the additional fat which is not healthy.  You can also find calcium in dark-green leafy vegetables, almonds, tofu and sardines.  Other food that are rich in calcium include wholemeal bread, kale, oatmeal, soya flour and American cheese.

If you do not eat enough food to get the recommended daily dose of calcium, then it is a good idea to take a calcium supplement.  Vitamin D plays an essential role in assisting the absorption of calcium into your body so if you’re not getting enough sunlight every day, then take a Vitamin D supplement along with your calcium supplement as well.

Healthy Snacks

Healthy Snacks e1465179653897

It can be very tempting to snack between meals.  Why not make up some healthy snacks to keep you satisfied and keep you away from eating junk food?  Here are some healthy snack ideas to get you started.

1.  Keep healthy snacks with you when you go to work or out.  If you already have the snacks with you, then you won’t be tempted to stop at the closest convenience store and pick up candy or chips.

2.  Prepare healthy snacks in advance and keep them in your fridge or in a basket on the table.  By having your snacks prepared in advance, it makes it easy for you to just grab one and take it with you on the way out the door.  Cut up fresh fruit and vegetables and put them in ziplock bags in the fridge so that they will be readily available when the cravings hit.

3.  Keep things in the house like low-fat yogurt, rice cakes, air-popped popcorn, baby carrots, celery sticks, and whole-grain crackers.

4.  If you crave things like chocolate, then why not try keeping mini-chocolate bars in the freezer and only take one and eat it slowly.  Many times you will find that it will satisfy your craving as well as save you hundreds of calories and many fat grams.

5.  If you must snack in front of the TV at night, eat air-popped popcorn, pretzels, whole-grain crackers, cut-up fruit or other nutritious low-calorie foods.

You could also find something to keep your hands busy while you’re watching TV like knitting, painting, or other crafts that will keep your mind off snacking.

It may be difficult at first to quit grabbing the easiest snacks that are high in calories and fat, but once you get in the habit of eating healthy snacks, you will not only feel better, but you may find yourself needing a smaller size of pants.

Sympathy, Knowledge and Poise

Sympathy Knowledge and Poise e1465171702250

Sympathy, Knowledge and Poise seem to be the three ingredients that are most needed in forming the Gentle Man. I place these elements according to their value. No man is great who does not have Sympathy plus, and the greatness of men can be safely gauged by their sympathies. Sympathy and imagination are twin sisters. Your heart must go out to all men, the high, the low, the rich, the poor, the learned, the unlearned, the good, the bad, the wise and the foolish it is necessary to be one with them all, else you can never comprehend them. Sympathy! it is the touchstone to every secret, the key to all knowledge, the open sesame of all hearts. Put yourself in the other man’s place and then you will know why he thinks certain things and does certain deeds. Put yourself in his place and your blame will dissolve itself into pity, and your tears will wipe out the record of his misdeeds. The saviors of the world have simply been men with wondrous sympathy.

But Knowledge must go with Sympathy, else the emotions will become maudlin and pity may be wasted on a poodle instead of a child; on a field-mouse instead of a human soul. Knowledge in use is wisdom, and wisdom implies a sense of values you know a big thing from a little one, a valuable fact from a trivial one. Tragedy and comedy are simply questions of value: a little misfit in life makes us laugh, a great one is tragedy and cause for expression of grief.

Poise is the strength of body and strength of mind to control your Sympathy and your Knowledge. Unless you control your emotions they run over and you stand in the mire. Sympathy must not run riot, or it is valueless and tokens weakness instead of strength. In every hospital for nervous disorders are to be found many instances of this loss of control. The individual has Sympathy but not Poise, and therefore his life is worthless to himself and to the world.

He symbols inefficiency and not helpfulness. Poise reveals itself more in voice than it does in words; more in thought than in action; more in atmosphere than in conscious life. It is a spiritual quality, and is felt more than it is seen. It is not a matter of bodily size, nor of bodily attitude, nor attire, nor of personal comeliness: it is a state of inward being, and of knowing your cause is just. And so you see it is a great and profound subject after all, great in its ramifications, limitless in extent, implying the entire science of right living. I once met a man who was deformed in body and little more than a dwarf, but who had such Spiritual Gravity such Poise that to enter a room where he was, was to feel his presence and acknowledge his superiority. To allow Sympathy to waste itself on unworthy objects is to deplete one’s life forces. To conserve is the part of wisdom, and reserve is a necessary element in all good literature, as well as in everything else.

Poise being the control of our Sympathy and Knowledge, it implies a possession of these attributes, for without having Sympathy and Knowledge you have nothing to control but your physical body. To practice Poise as a mere gymnastic exercise, or study in etiquette, is to be self-conscious, stiff, preposterous and ridiculous. Those who cut such fantastic tricks before high heaven as make angels weep, are men void of Sympathy and Knowledge trying to cultivate Poise. Their science is a mere matter of what to do with arms and legs. Poise is a question of spirit controlling flesh, heart controlling attitude.

Get Knowledge by coming close to Nature. That man is the greatest who best serves his kind. Sympathy and Knowledge are for use you acquire that you may give out; you accumulate that you may bestow. And as God has given unto you the sublime blessings of Sympathy and Knowledge, there will come to you the wish to reveal your gratitude by giving them out again; for the wise man is aware that we retain spiritual qualities only as we give them away. Let your light shine. To him that hath shall be given. The exercise of wisdom brings wisdom; and at the last the infinitesimal quantity of man’s knowledge, compared with the Infinite, and the smallness of man’s Sympathy when compared with the source from which ours is absorbed, will evolve an abnegation and a humility that will lend a perfect Poise. The Gentleman is a man with perfect Sympathy, Knowledge, and Poise.
